Buying electronic vinyl without overpaying

Electronic albums are frequently long, and that shapes what you should look for. Anything past about 45 minutes needs to be a double LP to be cut properly, and bass-heavy material needs the space more than most — a 70-minute album squeezed onto one disc will sound noticeably thinner and quieter. The format line on the product page tells you which you are getting, and the cheaper listing is not always the same edition.

Nineties and early-2000s classics are in a reissue cycle at the moment, which is where the discounts are. Quality varies: some are cut from the original DAT or tape masters, some from whatever digital file was to hand. Reissue labels with a reputation to protect say so on the sleeve.

Also worth knowing: a fair amount of club-oriented electronic vinyl is cut at 45rpm across more discs, which sounds better and costs more to press, so a three-disc 45rpm edition at £35 may be better value than a single-disc version at £22 if you are actually playing it loud.
