Buying soul & r&b vinyl without overpaying
Classic soul is reissued more or less permanently, which keeps prices soft and makes this one of the better genres for building a collection cheaply. The catch is that sixties and seventies recordings are unusually sensitive to how they were transferred, and the difference between a careful reissue and a lazy one is audible on a modest system.
Mono versus stereo is a live question for anything Motown or Stax-era. Many of those records were mixed for mono first, with the stereo version an afterthought that pans the vocal hard to one side. Where a reissue offers the mono mix, it is usually the one the producers intended, and it is frequently the cheaper of the two.
Half-speed masters and audiophile pressings carry a premium here and are often worth it, but they rarely discount much. The everyday value is in standard reissues from the labels that own the tapes, which do go on offer regularly — particularly compilations and anniversary editions, which press in larger numbers than they sell.
