Buying country vinyl without overpaying

Country is under-collected in the UK relative to its catalogue depth, which works in your favour: classic Nashville and outlaw-era albums are pressed for the American market in large numbers and reach UK listings at prices that would be optimistic for equivalent rock records.

Modern Americana is generally pressed well — the artists and labels in that scene tend to care, and the recordings are recent enough to have proper digital or analogue masters behind them. Reissues of fifties and sixties country are more variable, and the same cautions apply as in blues: very cheap editions of famous albums are usually licensed reprints from indifferent sources.

Compilation sets are the reliable value here. So much of the classic era was singles-driven that a well-sequenced anthology often gives you more of an artist than any single album they released, and those sets discount heavily because they press in bigger runs than they sell.
