Buying punk vinyl without overpaying

Punk on vinyl splits sharply between original pressings, which are collector items priced accordingly, and modern reissues, which are where anything affordable lives. Amazon deals are almost always the latter, and the quality range is wide — Epitaph, Fat Wreck and Rhino reissues are reliable, while unattributed European pressings of the same albums frequently are not.

Because so much punk was recorded fast and cheap, mastering makes an unusual difference. A good reissue keeps the rawness intact; a bad one sounds flat and small, and no amount of volume fixes it. Product pages that name the source — remastered from the original tapes, cut by a named engineer — are worth paying a few pounds more for.

The other thing to check is run time. Classic punk albums are often under 30 minutes, which means a 12-inch can be cut loud and wide with excellent results, and it also means a "deluxe" double LP is usually padding rather than an upgrade. Singles collections and anthologies are frequently the better buy for the money.
