Buying pop vinyl without overpaying

Pop discounts the hardest and the fastest of any genre on Amazon, because chart releases are pressed in enormous quantities against forecasts that are frequently wrong. The window between release week and the first real price drop is often only a few weeks, and drops of 40% are routine rather than exceptional.

The complication is editions. A major pop release now ships as standard black, two or three coloured variants, sometimes a signed edition and often a picture disc — usually at different prices, always with identical audio except the picture disc, which genuinely does sound worse. Picture discs are pressed onto a printed core, and surface noise is the price of the artwork. If you are buying to listen rather than to display, standard black is the better record and usually the cheaper one.

Catalogue pop follows different rules. Eighties and nineties albums get repressed constantly, and the cheap copies are often cut from digital masters rather than tape. Where a page names the mastering source, that is worth reading before you buy.
