Buying indie & alternative vinyl without overpaying
Indie is where the biggest and fastest discounts appear, for a simple structural reason: labels press optimistically for release week, and whatever does not sell in the first month has to go somewhere. A record that shipped at £26 in March is often £15 by July, and it is the same pressing, not a lesser one.
That makes patience genuinely profitable in this genre. If an album is not essential to you on day one, the odds of it dropping 30-40% within a few months are good — considerably better than for catalogue rock or jazz, where prices are steadier.
The exception is anything tied to Record Store Day or a limited coloured variant, which either sells out at full price or lingers depending entirely on the artist. Watch for those going the other way. It is also worth checking whether a cheap listing is an import; import pressings are usually fine, but delivery estimates can stretch to a few weeks, and returns are more awkward if the disc arrives dished or seam-split.
