Buying soundtracks vinyl without overpaying

Soundtracks follow the film, not the music, which makes their pricing unusually predictable. A score presses heavily around a release or an anniversary, sells to the people who want it in the first two months, and then sits — which is why this category produces some of the steepest reductions on the site.

The specialist labels — Mondo, Waxwork, Death Waltz — press limited coloured editions that sell out at full price and then resell above it, so those rarely appear as deals. The standard editions from the studios and major labels are the ones that discount, and for anything other than a display copy they are the same music on better-behaved vinyl.

Two things worth checking on the product page. First, whether you are buying the score or the songs-from-the-film compilation, which are different records and frequently share a title. Second, the disc count: complete scores often run to two or three LPs, and abridged single-disc editions of the same title exist at a similar price.
